We were in Brazil for almost two months exploring the country and learning about its culture and culinary history. The most interesting part of it all was connecting the dots and finding out the origins of Brazil’s food. Once a Portuguese colony, Brazilian food is heavily influenced by the Portuguese so finding things like bacalhau (salted cod), feijoada, pudim and pastel de nata won’t be difficult.
One of my favorite spots in São Paulo is a bakery called Casa Mathilde. I am a sucker for sweets, especially anything involving flaky pastries and eggs. Casa Mathilde is located in Centro keeping Portuguese traditions alive through baking. Whipping up both savory and sweet pastries, Casa Mathilde’s display case is filled with different types of breads, palmiers, biscuits, cookies, pies, puff pastry, croissants, tarts and more.
Although Casa Mathilde has a wide range of baked goods, the bakery is recognized for having some of the best Pastéis de Nata with a fresh batch being pulled out of the oven every 15 minutes. You can witness all the egg tart action happening through a huge glass window on the main floor as you wait in line for these bad boys. I’ve only ever had Portuguese egg tarts in Macau and Hong Kong, but the ones at Casa Mathilde were on a whole ‘nother level. The egg custard filling was piping hot with the perfect consistency sitting in a flaky buttery shell. I’m dying to go back to eat more of these!
Pastel de Nata (R$5.20 or $2.00 USD).
Pastel de Santa Clara (R$6.50 or $2.45 USD). These are similar to Pastel de Nata made with a more concentrated egg yolk and sugar center placed in a thin crispy pastry shell.
Pastel de São Bento (R$4.50 or $1.70 USD). These were pretty tasty too, but the other pastels were better!
Queijada de Leite ($R3.50 or $1.30 USD). This was one of my favorites! The consistency was more a pudding made with a condensed milk base.
