Joyce Cheng’s Top 5 CRAY CRAY Restaurant Picks in Hong Kong !!!
Say wuddup to my home girl Joyce Cheng, a mad talented singer and actress in Hong Kong. I knew this girl would know where to find good eats as soon as I tasted a batch of her freshly baked home-made cookies from her latest venture, Homie Cookies. I asked her to share her favorite restaurants in Hong Kong and here’s what she had to say!
Tell me about yourself Joyce!
Harro, I’m Joyce Cheng. I’m a singer/actress in Hong Kong. I just recently released my third album and I like to shamelessly promote that fact on my Instagram account (@princejoyce). I was born n raised in Vancouver, Canada but now I’m in Hong Kong. Good food with good people is the answer to all my problems.
What are your 5 favorite restaurants in Hong Kong?
1) Awakening Cafe: Good old ‘MURICAN goodness. Best. Ribs. Ever. Their mac n’ cheese with honey ham is homemade amazingness. For those of you who don’t want such a heavy meal, their Santa Fe Chicken Salad is a great option too. Laid back vibes with an impressive beer collection too. Perfection.

2) Chicken on the Run: I’m cheating. This is an Australian pick-up-only restaurant with just a few bar stools at the front of the shop to sit and eat… but I must let everybody know how good this place’s chicken is! Their Salt and Pepper chicken is succulent and juicy. Get the Family Dinner Deal with whole roast chicken, corn on the cob, mash, peas and gravyyyy. Only thing is their brownies kinda suck.

3) San Xi Lou: SiChuan cray !!! A lot of people come to this restaurant for the spicy SiChuan hotpot, but I think that the hotpot here is just mediocre. I come here for their Water Boiled Spicy Beef! The texture of the beef is perfect, but the hardest part is getting the flavors right. Most places where try this dish often try too hard to make it spicy, but forget to blend any of the flavors to make it actually TASTE good. The Water Boiled Spicy Beef here is fragrant and the glass noodles they put in the pot are yummy too. This place is packed most of the time so make reservations. Also a tad on the pricey side.

4) Fairyland: Deep fried Korean fried chicken coated in a sweet and tangy sauce. One of the dishes is served with a side of pickled turnip slices, sliced garlic and chilies. Wrap a piece of the chicken, the garlic and chili in the pickled turnip slice, it’s the perfect combination. This restaurant is fairly new and haven’t gotten their liquor license yet, so make sure to BYOB if you wanna drink.

5) Great Beef Hot Pot: the BEST hot pot in town! Nothing super fancy or innovative about this joint, just really good, quality ingredients in everything they serve. I highly recommend their beef cubes (the longer you cook them, the more tender they get, so throw them in at the beginning of your meal), their Low Yau Guai Guai (shrimp paste on top of chinese doughnut. they pre-fry these, so all you needa do is dip it into the pot for five seconds, the dough stays crunchy, everything’s good), their Heung Ling (deep fried dough sheets, these are especially fluffy compared to the ones you’d get else where. so just dip it in the pot for a couple seconds), their Grilled Corn (cooked with a buttery sweet, almost caramel like sauce)… ok, I could go on with this one. JUST TRY IT!
