Nothing beats the option of customizing food to your liking which is why I love “Cart Noodles” or 車仔麵, a Hong Kong dish where diners can create a personalized bowl of noodles by selecting the type of noodles and toppings one desires. Back in the day, Cart Noodles were perceived as peasant food served by street cart vendors on the side of the road usually found in ghetto areas of the city. Nowadays, Cart Noodles have become a popular local pedestrian food still offered at a low price point.
The reason why I dig cart noodles is because it can be different every time depending on your appetite. There’s so much variety that it never gets old. The possibilities are endless! The first step is to choose toppings. Most places offer an assortment of balls (fish, beef, squid etc), dumplings, pork, chicken, beef brisket, veggies, and more. Once toppings are determined, the type of noodles is to be selected including egg, rice and instant noodles.
My main squeeze for Cart Noodles is a tiny shop in Causeway Bay called Wing Kee or 榮記粉麵. This hole in the wall doesn’t look like much and has pretty bad service, but their noodles definitely hit the spot. There’s something about that broth and the toppings are always mad tasty! I’ve had my share of Cart Noodles and Wing Kee is one of the better joints in town.
I usually get 3 toppings. This time around I was feelin’ thick round noodles topped with beef brisket, braised daikon, and fish dumplings which are essentially dumplings gluten-free (don’t quote me on that, who knows what else is in them) fish dumplings.
Fried Fish Skin – sounds ratchet, but actually pretty effing good. They have a crunchy texture and aren’t fishy at all. These are good on their own or dipped quickly into soup.
Morning Glory – we usually get a bowl of seasonal vegetables soaked in that delicious flavorful beef broth.
Eugene usually selects a minimum of 4 toppings. This time, he ordered 2 portions of beef brisket, sliced pork neck and fish dumplings.
