Egg waffles, eggettes, bubble waffle or as the Chinese call it, gaidaan jai (鷄蛋仔) are an iconic Hong Kong street food, dating back to the 1950s. Egg waffles are essentially spherical egg-based waffles cooked between two waffle irons containing semi-spherical molds. The OG recipe consists of eggs, flour, sugar and evaporated milk. Over the years, people have tweaked and perfected the recipe, creating turntup innovative versions of the Hong Kong classic.
My go-to has always been Mammy Pancake, made with either sesame, chocolate chips or au naturel. Oddies Foodies is the latest spot to pop up putting the Hong Kong essential on a whole ‘nother level. Oddies Foodies has taken the waffles combining it with gelato, ice cream, panna cotta, brownies and more. Specializing in low fat soft serve gelato, Oddies Foodies’ menu is somewhat confusing, overwhelming and seemingly overly complicated, but sort-of-kind-of works.
The “Night Wolf” for instance is described as “Italian low fat soft gelato twisted with 66% dark chocolate served with buttery crumbles, caramelised banana ice cream, passion fruit panna cotta, brownie and chocolate chips eggettes and crunchy flakes.” Sounds pretty intense, but it’s actually pretty damn tasty. I haven’t been to Oddies for a minute, but according to the internet, they’ve been experimenting with green olives, sundried tomato, miso, daikon and more. I’ve only tasted the Night Wolf so far, but I’m definitely diggin’ the sound of this, “Italian low fat soft gelato, served with jasmine panna cotta, butter crumbs, apple raisin chutney, dehydrated carrot cake, topped with a giant cookie of the day, and sprinkled with cacao nibs.”
